Time for serious debate on UK relationships - Plaid’s Elin Jones addresses SNP conference

23/10/2021

‘It is now time for a serious debate on the future constitutional relationship of the countries of the British Islands’. That will be the message from Plaid Cymru AM Elin Jones later today as she addresses the SNP conference in Inverness. In her speech, Ms Jones will say that as Scotland progresses towards independence, the other UK nations need to consider their own constitutional futures.

The Plaid Cymru AM for Ceredigion, Elin Jones, will say:

“As the SNP and Scotland progress the arrangements for the re-establishment of an independent Scotland, we are left to consider what would be left - a UK Government governing all English matters, only some Welsh matters and even fewer Northern Irish matters. It is now time for a serious debate on the future constitutional relationship of the countries of the British Islands. It is time to debate equality, not subservience and dependence.

"The United Kingdom is currently a pretence of a country – after a Yes vote in the Scottish referendum, it could no longer pretend to anyone – not even itself. The debate in Scotland on the future of the country must inspire us to debate the future of our nation. What happens to Scotland matters to us. As Scotland strides forward with confidence, Plaid Cymru will not allow Wales to be left behind as a constitutional after-thought. In Wales we cannot rely on a sluggish, unambitious, reactive Labour Welsh Government to make the case for the Welsh nation. Once again, Wales will need Plaid Cymru to lead the debate and make change happen.

“Our nations have embarked upon exciting paths – Wales and Scotland on two different paths that lead, I hope, to the same destination. We all know that constitutional and fiscal Independence alone will not solve all the challenges that face us, but that Independence will give our people the tools to release our enormous potential.”
