Party reaches out with invite to national open leadership debate
14/02/2012
Plaid Cymru has announced that it will be holding a national leadership debate which will be open to the public as well as members and supporters of the party. The event, which will take place next Tuesday evening 21st February at 19h30 at the St David’s hotel in Cardiff, will be an opportunity for all those interested in the election to listen to the Plaid leadership candidates and to ask questions.
The leadership debate, chaired by Daran Hill, has been arranged in association with the political blog waleshome.org, which will be covering the event live.
In what is a ‘first’ for the party, Plaid has issued the open invitation in order to further boost the already vibrant debate about the future of the party and of the nation.
People wishing to attend can book free tickets, and submit questions through Plaid’s website, www.plaidcymru.org
Plaid Cymru Chief Executive, Rhuanedd Richards said;
“We said from the outset that we would make this leadership election an inclusive and transparent process, which is why we’re delighted to announce today that we’re holding this open leadership debate.
The three candidates have already toured the length and breadth of Wales in order to share their vision and ideas for the future of our nation with our members and supporters. Attendance at the party’s Hustings has been fantastic, and this national open debate will now allow them to discuss their plans on a wider platform too.
“This election has already generated a tremendous amount of interest and excitement about Plaid and the future of our party. To see our membership surge by 23% in recent months has been a tremendous boost to all those who believe that together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Wales.
Our work in renewing Plaid for Wales has only just begun, and this event is a great opportunity to discuss the future of the party and of the nation.
Wales Home’s Daran Hill, who will chair the debate, said;
“This leadership election has been a very positive move for Plaid Cymru.
“The open and transparent nature of the campaign shows that they are a party serious about engaging inside and outside the party.
“I’m delighted to be chairing and supporting this important event which is contributing to, and enhancing democracy in Welsh politics.”
