Plaid Cymru calls for clarity from Labour on hospital downgrading plans

Plaid Cymru Health Spokesperson Elin Jones AM has said that the publication of a report commissioned by the NHS confederation today signals that the Labour government is planning to press ahead with plans to centralise health services and downgrade hospitals. Elin Jones said that Plaid Cymru would continue to oppose Labour’s plans. She added that Plaid Cymru believes that clinical evidence, not short term financial considerations and ideological re-organisations, should guide the future of the NHS.

Plaid Cymru calls on Welsh Government to emulate the One Wales example

In a debate in the Assembly, Plaid Cymru has called on the Welsh Government to emulate the example of One Wales and prioritise jobs and investment to help the Welsh economy cope with the economic crisis. The party has accused the Welsh Government of preferring to make political gain from the cuts rather than protecting Wales from them.

Plaid Cymru calls for standard national qualification

Plaid Cymru’s education spokesperson, Simon Thomas has today called for the implementation of a single exam system to set GCSE and A Level qualifications in schools and colleges across Wales for mainstream subjects in order to standardise the system. Mr Thomas’s call followed concerns raised by the qualifications watchdog, OFQUAL, that papers are becoming less demanding and easier for pupils. The Plaid Cymru AM for Mid and West Wales argued that this is a result of the increasing marketisation of education. He explained that examination boards are competing against each other to have their courses taken up by schools.

Plaid Cymru leader presses First Minister on anti poverty measures

Plaid Cymru Leader, Leanne Wood AM, today put pressure on the Labour First Minister to take action to tackle rising poverty in Wales. Leanne Wood reminded Labour that the party, in its 2011 manifesto, had pledged to Work with trade unions, employers and other stakeholders to explore ways of ensuring a living wage for every worker in Wales, given that low pay is a significant problem for many families and the challenges of inwork poverty remain.” Ms Wood questioned why Labour had so far failed to deliver on this pledge for a ‘living wage’.

Time for Labour to stop the rhetoric and take action

Plaid Cymru has reiterated its call for the Welsh Government to take real action to protect the interests of Welsh Remploy workers by bringing it under Welsh control following callous comments made by the Tory Pensions Secretary. Comments by Iain Duncan Smith which suggest that Remploy factories do not offer ‘proper jobs’ have revealed once again that the UK Government fails to understand the importance of continued support for disabled and vulnerable workers.

Labour Government's campaign to talk down Llanelli hospital

“This raises some serious questions about the integrity of this Labour Welsh Government. They have been denying that they have plans to downgrade Llanelli hospital – but now the truth has been exposed. Not only is Labour planning to downgrade hospitals, they are also planning a cynical PR campaign to undermine confidence in services so that they can get their way. People in Llanelli feel angry and misled by the way Labour has acted over this.

Proof that Welsh NHS is not safe in Labour's hands

Plaid attacks Labour’s cynical plans to undermine health services

Today’s revelations show that Labour is planning a cynical spin campaign to undermine public confidence in the health service. That was the message from Plaid Cymru’s Health spokesperson, Elin Jones AM who added that the plans clearly expose Labour’s intention to downgrade hospitals.

One of the many protest nationwide that have been held agaist Labour's plans

Plaid Cymru Health Spokesperson Elin Jones AM said:

“These revelations have exposed the Labour Welsh Government’s intentions to downgrade hospitals – they want to undermine public confidence in health services so that they can get away with their damaging plans.

“This is a thoroughly cynical and distasteful scaremongering tactic by Labour, and people across Wales will be horrified that they are willing to sink to these depths in order to get their way.

“What this proves is that our Health service is not safe in Labour’s hands –the very least the people of Wales should be able to expect now is that the government comes clean over the nature of the cuts it wants to deliver.”
